I encourage you to listen to each song, but, I know that, in reality, this is far too time consuming. So, feel free to pick and choose, and become familiar with what Lana has to offer. Lana often juxtaposes the colors black and blue. It’s what you gathered from my talk, but you were wrong I don’t really wanna break up, we got it going on It’s my favorite color and my favorite tone of song Blue may not mean complete happiness, but it does mean an almost ethereal meditative state similar to the feeling of being completely immersed in water.Ĭarry me home, got my blue nail polish on Blue is not necessarily the opposite, but exists in opposition to black, as essentially the only alternative state of mind.īlack is seen as inevitable, overwhelming, and horrifically saddening. Throughout Ultraviolence and Honeymoon, Lana battles being overcome by the color-feeling “black,” attempting to escape into the blue. The Blackest Day is, in my opinion, the peak of the album. Here, Lana battles, almost literally, the sadness she feels on the “blackest day,” depressed, listening to only Billie Holiday.

She’s experiencing the aftermath of a disastrous relationship, trying to contend with what is left of herself when her lover’s absence is permanent.

The melodies and harmonic contrasts that pervade this song are beautiful and haunting. Lana showcases the full range of her vocal abilities. The bridge is intriguing, but is not such an antithesis to the rest of the song that it doesn’t make sense anymore-it fits perfectly. Finally, the song ends with an empowered person, unsure of her future, but ready to face it by herself. I feel that the theme of “blue” pervades every single album, and perhaps every single song in Lana’s discography.
